McRobbie suggests tuition increases

If President Michael McRobbie has his way, in-state students at IU-Bloomington can expect a 4.6 percent increase in tuition this year and a 4.8 percent increase in tuition the next.

According to a press release, McRobbie said these increases will help prepare the University for a potential six percent cut in state funding two years from now.

But, on average, McRobbie said in spite of the increased tuition cost, Hoosiers will pay $177 less for an IU education because of more financial aid grants, according to a press release.

But students' pockets won't be the only ones who might feel the onslaught of the recession. McRobbie is also proposing spending restraints, such as travel and hiring restrictions.

"It is unlikely that federal stimulus money will be available in the next budget cycle to close this funding shortfall, so we must begin preparing now for what will likely be a budgetary cliff," McRobbie said in the release.
