Putting it into words

Although the dread of classes is just around the corner, it is my pleasure to introduce myself as the music columnist for the fall semester.

Since this is specifically the music column, I will, of course, focus on music, but I hope it can be something more than just that. Instead of concentrating on reviews for newly released albums and upcoming artists, I want to write something different for my readers.

Music is such an intrinsic part of the American culture, so it would only seem appropriate to discuss and explore the vast possibilities music can bring us.
Music can convey emotion from people who would otherwise stay concealed, and it performs a principal role in any culture.

Victor Hugo, a French poet and writer, said, “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and cannot remain silent.”

I cannot say it more simply. Music is everywhere, and sometimes what is spoken in a song cannot be said in a book, poem or any other piece of work.

Introducing student artists who fall under the radar or creating the perfect playlist for occasions such as a dinner or a party are just a couple of my ideas for this column.

I am well aware of the huge range of music out in the world, from death metal to bluegrass. And still, there are artists creating new and inventive music inspired by their predecessors.

With this said, I am going to try my hardest to hit as many genres through this column as I can. However, since mainstream music is the forerunner on campus, it will be a leading topic.

And like experimental music, I want to bring a refreshing way to look at and to enjoy music in all of its glory. After all, that’s what listening to music is all about, right?
I cannot wait to start this semester as a music columnist and bring something of value to my readers as well.
