Author highlights LGBTQ, rural life

Author Mary L. Gray will read and discuss her latest book, "Out in the Country: Youth, Media, and Queer Visibility in Rural America." 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Boxcar Books and Community Center.

Gray, who is also an assistant professor in the Department of Communication and Culture, will tell specific stories of LGBTQ youth growing up in rural areas as well as the lessons she learned from her research.

The book, is a look at the lives of LGBTQ teenagers in small towns across rural Kentucky, far from the lives the teens may have experienced in a large city.

Gray said in a press release she hopes her book will spark conversation and have readers thinking about changing politics regarding LGBTQ.

The reading and discussion is sponsored by BloomingOUT and is free and open to the public.
