Built to Spill are not built to break

All four permanent members of Built to Spill will take the stage at The Bluebird this Monday in support of their new album, “There is No Enemy.”

They will be playing alongside Disco Doom, an indie-rock band from Switzerland.
Manager of the indie music blog Puddlegum, Kevin Flick said he has never seen Built to Spill perform live before and is very excited to see them.

“I’ve been listening to them for several years and view Built to Spill as an influential yet underrated band,” Flick said. “They were very active in the 1990s, but this will be their third album in this decade. Built to Spill is one of the bands that bridges the alt-rock sound of the ‘90s with the indie movement of today.”

The band was formed in in Boise, Idaho. by former Treepeople frontman Doug Martsch. Ever since, the band has been through a rotating cast of musicians and produced six full-length albums, with their seventh, “There Is No Enemy.” to be released Oct. 6 via their Warner Bros. record label.

Originally, Martsch has said in several interviews that he intended to change the band’s line up with every album, keeping himself as the only permanent member.

However, with Built to Spill’s 2006 album release of “You In Reverse,” the lineup officially includes members Scott Plouf, Jim Roth, and Brett Netson.

According to a biography on the Built to Spill Web site, Martsch is hesitant to reveal the meaning behind his music so listeners are free to interpret the songs for themselves.

Their upcoming album is expected to echo influences of soul music, while still retaining  their originally idiosyncratic sound.

Senior Max Watters said he has listened to Built to Spill since he was in high school and is anticipating the new album.

“I’ve liked everything they’ve put out in the past, so I imagine their new album will be just as good as their previous albums,” Watters said.
