It would seem unwise not to talk about Sunday’s Video Music Awards.
Of course, talk and gossip about Kanye West and Lil’ Mama’s random appearance on stage were overflowing the past three days, but I have to admit I was absolutely flabbergasted by Lady Gaga’s performance.
I was sitting in the living room with my roomies watching DVR, so the tweets and Facebook statuses were coming in before I realized what had happened.
“Wow, thanks, Lady Gaga. I am going to have nightmares,” was just one of the many things I read on my computer screen.
When we finally caught up, I couldn’t quite understand what the big deal was.
She’s different, yeah, but what was so frightening?
And then I saw the blood.
Our reaction mirrored the audience’s. I couldn’t quite grasp what had happened, where the blood had come from, or why she would even do something like that for her performance.
But now, looking back on it and after watching her performance again, I’ve realized how creative she really is.
Thinking of the blood and death metaphorically with the song “Paparazzi” it made sense.
The lyrics, “I’m your biggest fan, I’ll follow you until you love me,” reflects the obsession fans and photographers have with celebrities.
It is almost as if fame and attention kills her.
And as scary and weird as it was, it was still genius.
It gets more and more bizarre, as if she’s trying to outdo herself each time.
And I have to say, she took the cake on this one. I am just eager to see what she has up her sleeve for the next VMAs.
Even though her costume changes – there had to be at least 20 of them – were hysterical, I had to give her credit for her creativity and guts to go against the grain of every other artist.
Everyone can write on Twitter and Facebook about how creepy and weird she might be, but to me, she’s a representation of everyone different.
She’s not afraid to express her individuality, and that is something to be admired.
Lady Gaga: creepy, yet creative
