Men's golf finishes last at top-tier tournament

The IU men’s golf team finished 15th place out of 15 at the Ping/Golfweek Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.

The Hoosiers finished the week with a three round total of 933 (319, 301, 313). A first round 319 for the Hoosiers was the highest 18-hole round by an IU men’s golf team since a 325 shot in the 2006 Big Ten Championships.

The Hoosiers bounced back in the afternoon on Sunday to shoot a 301 in the second round led by senior Alex Martin’s one-under par 71.

Martin was the lone bright spot for the Hoosiers, finishing the tournament in a tie for sixth place with a three-round total 220. For the tournament, Martin played the four par-fives in eight under par including birding all four par fives in the final round.

Sophomore Chase Wright bounced back from an 82 in the opening round with rounds of 74 and 76, which put him in 51st individually.

Five strokes higher than Wright was fellow sophomore David Erdy, who finished in 67th place.

Freshman Brant Peaper finished in 73rd place for the Hoosiers after shooting a pair of 81’s in the first two rounds and closing with an 82.

Redshirt freshman Andrew Frandsen made his collegiate debut this weekend for the Hoosiers and finished the tournament in 75th place.

The field at the Invitational included eight of the top-25 teams in the nation and the 15 teams taking part in the tournament were invited based on their 2008-2009 Golfweek rankings.

The Hoosiers return to the Midwest next weekend to play in the Windon Memorial Classic in Glencoe, Ill.
