The No. 8 IU men’s soccer team defeated Florida International 2-1 in double overtime Sunday to even up its record at 1-1 on the weekend at the University of Akron Tournament.
Forward Will Bruin scored both goals for the Hoosiers, bringing his total on the year to four.
“We came out a little slow, and FIU is one of those teams that if you don’t put them away early, they’ll end up sticking around,” Bruin said. “They were big and physical, and they packed it in playing for long ball counterattack.”
The Hoosier offense dominated FIU in total shots 20-9 as well as total time of possession, but late in regulation, a Golden Panther goal tied the game at 1-1 and forced overtime.
“Most teams would have lost that game,” coach Mike Freitag said. “To dominate the whole game and then give up a late goal, most teams would have lost. We found a way to win and walked away with a 'W.'”
Bruin’s game-winner came six minutes into the second overtime.
“(Forward Darren) Yeagle played a through ball and I started running for it,” Bruin said. “The goalie hesitated a bit and I gave it a toe poke and it went through. I finally got one with my foot.”
The Hoosiers, whose record improves to 3-2-1, finish their five-game road trip Friday when they visit Wisconsin.
