Yorn and Johansson make breaking up so sweet

I wanted to avoid album reviews as much as possible, but this beautiful “break up” was just too hard to resist.

Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson’s “Break Up” was released earlier this month and so far, I have not heard much hullabaloo about the project.

However, Yorn is one of my favorite artists, so naturally, I jumped right on the opportunity to listen to their collaboration of tunes.

According to Rolling Stone, Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot’s 1968“Bonnie and Clyde” song inspired the album. And when he contacted Johansson about the project, she readily agreed.

Although the album is about the break up of two tortured lovers, it isn’t a gloomy or depressing soundtrack of the romance. Instead, it follows in the same toe-tapping footsteps Yorn has already walked in his career.

I was pleasantly surprised by the old-fashioned voice of Johansson. Her seductive vocal technique was definitely reflected through the music.

This album is a really enjoyable listen, especially for someone looking for a blend of light and tortured love.

Although Johansson’s first album didn’t receive outstanding reviews, this one displays world of improvement in her voice and her collaborative effort with Pete Yorn.

The reviews seem to be mixed so far, with the BBC calling the collection of songs “well-crafted” and comparing the combination of Yorn and Johansson to She & Him, comprised of musician M. Ward and actress Zooey Deschanel.

There seems to be a trend of magic in the music industry lately of unlikely pairings of two artists from opposite spectrums.

This one between Yorn and Johansson works.

Their folky pop sound and the texture of their amazing voices collide for one great album of love and heartbreak, with an upbeat twist.

It serves as the perfect soundtrack to an evening alone in the bubble bath with a good book and a glass of wine.

There’s not much more you could really ask for.
