Fashion Mythbusters

There is a misconception surrounding several fashion trends, stating that unless you look like supermodel Gisele Bundchen or are made of plastic and stand in a store’s display window, certain items should never make it on to your body.

While models make clothes seem as appealing as possible, that does not mean they are the only people who can look fabulous in them. All bitterness toward the genetically gifted aside, some slight alterations and additions take tricky trends from off-limits to good-to-go.

Skinny jeans sadly seem to deter everyone with the slightest bit of badonk. Anything tapered into the ankle will create the illusion of a larger thigh, unless the correct adjustments are made.

Dark wash denim is a good place to start. Deeper colors streamline the leg and erase even the slightest “Christmas ham.”

Skinny jeans are best worn with a voluminous top to balance out your shape. A black skinny slack is another ultra flattering option that looks great paired with a men’s style blazer.

The adorable ankle bootie is infamous for making the short seem even shorter. It hits right at the bottom of your legs, making them appear stumpy.

The best way to combat the unwanted shortening is with a black boot and black opaque tights. This keeps the line of your leg continuous, making them seem longer. The opaqueness of the tights creates a flattering dimension that is always classy.

Empire wasted tops are notorious for creating the illusion of a possible bun in the oven. Anything that is not fitted or does not have definition at the natural waist has the tendency to add a few unwanted pounds.

A fitted bottom piece such as a high-wasted skirt gives you a more defined shape and diminishes the question of “is she or isn’t she?” The roominess of the top is polished when tucked in and the look is effortlessly sophisticated.

Possibly the most important aesthetic rule of thumb is balance.

Tops and bottoms should compliment each other. Simple additions make almost anything wearable.

And who knows? Maybe one day we will find a way to make the muumuu look fabulous.
