New York based DJ/rupture & Matt Shadetek, co-founders of their newly founded Dutty Artz label and collaborators on a new mix “Solar Life Raft,” will bring their skills 10 p.m. Saturday to The Video Saloon.
The event is co-sponsored by the IU chapter of Hip Hop Congress and the cover is $10. All of the proceeds from the show will be donated to the local non-profit organization Indiana Forest Alliance.
“It’s an opportunity for people who have never seen a dub, dancehall or experimental show to see something different in Bloomington and at the same time raise money,” IFA show organizer John Flannelly said.
“Small towns can be the most surprising, and the people can be most excited by new music there,” said DJ /rupture, better known as Jace Clayton.
Flannelly said WIUX will be giving away show tickets to listeners up until Friday.
“Hopefully it will get the word out there and get more people to show up,” he said.
Opening DJ sets will be performed by local Bloomington artists LVX, DJ Eade and Wicked Foundation’s DJ Mikey Fire and DJ Willbone.
Both Clayton and Shadetek learned to DJ by watching other people they knew and learning from them. After a six month long process of collecting music, the duo hit the studio and recorded their mix in two days.
Clayton and Shadetek used their interest in science fiction and aquatic sounds to establish a theme for the “Solar Life Raft” mix: global warming.
“We are talking about a world where global warming has drowned New York,” Shadetek said.
Clayton said the mix explores a world where the water level has risen to the fourth floor and ultra-smart dolphins are competing with educated kids for scarce resources.
“The kids are making music on cellphones and grilling octopus but the internet is dying and money doesn’t matter much,” he added.
Shadetek said the mix was inspired by Jamaican music, dancehall, reggae, and U.K. dance house music.
“We just hope people dance and hear some music they have not heard before,” Shadetek said.
