It wouldn’t be Little 5 without music

For those of you who have managed to make it this far into Little 5 week still lucid enough to read this column, I appreciate it.

I know it can be so tempting to just grab a bottle and pregame with your buddies.
But I’m glad you have been able to put aside that old-fashioned A&W Root Beer and beach volleyball game to really buckle down as we head into finals week.
I’m just kidding. We all know what this week is really about — the bike races.
Right?

To be honest, as much as I love the competition, excitement and men in biker shorts, Little 5 wouldn’t be known as the greatest college weekend or week — or even month, for you overachievers — if it wasn’t for the music.

It’s almost like a spring Christmas present when you find out who’s performing for Little 5.

From the stories I hear, when DMX came down, it was the one present no one could forget — well, maybe mostly because their court date was first thing Monday morning.
But this year, The Flaming Lips will perform today at the IU Auditorium. A folksy, eclectic band known for songs such as “Do You Realize??” — a great band for the airy feel that surrounds the campus this week.

Also, GLOWfest is today, featuring LMFAO. Those kooky guys have the best party anthems, including their smash hit, “I’m in Miami, B****.” My guess is the “B” stands for brethren.

Along with them is Mike Posner, a singer/songwriter with a flair for hip-hop.
His tracks include “Cooler than Me” and “Drug Dealer Girl,” which has been turned into a T-shirt for DOPE couture, but considering the increase in law enforcement this time of year brings, I would hold off wearing it until next weekend.

Kelley James will also be at GLOWfest, playing his guitar and collecting phone numbers while not skipping a beat during songs like “Falling For You” and “Six Bottles.” His sound has the chill factor of Jack Johnson but with a style all its own.

And Friday, Snoop Dogg is going to be in the hizzle for shizzle.

That’s still to cool to say, right?

Besides that memory lapse of what year I’m currently in, I have been listening to Snoop’s new album, “Malice in Wonderland,” and I have been pleasantly surprised.

Even at an age when most young people consider older folks behind the times, Snoop is still one of the most laid-back, coolest MCs out there.

Whether Little 5 means races, parties or music to you, we can all agree it’s one weekend where the campus really comes alive and the excitement is palpable.

My only advice is to have fun, be safe and be smart. Those volleyballs can hurt more than you think.
