BASEBALL

Five members of the IU baseball team have earned honors for their regular-season play, including sophomore Alex Dickerson, who was unanimously chosen as the 2010 Big Ten Player of the Year. He led the conference in batting average (.415), home runs (23) and RBI (73). Dickerson has become the first conference player to win Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. He is also the third Hoosier to earn Big Ten Player of the Year in school history and the second in 10 years.

Sophomore designated hitter Josh Lyon earned First Team All-Conference honors, and junior first baseman Jerrud Sabourin was named Second Team All-Big Ten for the second consecutive year. Two Hoosier seniors also were named to the Third Team — outfielder Michael Earley and second baseman Tyler Rogers. Another senior, outfielder Sterling Mack, earned the sportsmanship award.

FOOTBALL

Former Hoosier linebacker Jammie Kirlew has signed a contract with the Denver Broncos after being picked in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Kirlew is the first of three Hoosiers drafted to sign a contract. His four-year deal is worth $1.84 million and contained a $50,000 signing bonus.

TRACK AND FIELD

After sending 23 athletes to the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional meet, the Hoosiers will send 31 in 2010 and hope to improve on the 13 athletes who qualified for the national meet during the indoor season.
Forty-eight different teams will compete in the Regional, the last stop before the National Championships from June 9 to 12. Twelve qualifiers will advance from the Regional. Six Hoosiers are ranked in the top five, including Molly Beckwith, Derek Drouin, Faith Sherrill, Sarah Pease, Andrew Poore and De’Sean Turner.
Drouin won the 2009 regional title for the high jump, and seven other athletes continued on to the NCAA Championships.
