The IU volleyball team opened its season with a bang, defeating its three opponents to claim the Georgia Tech Courtyard Marriott Classic championship.
The Hoosiers (3-0) catapulted their tournament run by winning a five-set contest against host school Georgia Tech Friday. IU won both of the first two sets with 25-20 victories. But the Yellow Jackets battled back in the third and fourth sets to earn 25-22 and 25-20 victories. Then, after trading match points in the fifth set, IU seized the win with a 18-16 advantage.
Sweeps of Alabama-Birmingham and Alabama A&Mon Saturday earned the Hoosiers the overall tournament title.
Senior middle blocker Ashley Benson, a Third Team All-America selection in 2009, was named tournament Most Valuable Player after posting 40 kills at a .423 clip as well as 15 total blocks and four service aces.
