Live From Bloomington changes album format

Union Board is putting together this year’s Live From Bloomington CD team. The album, usually composed of the winning submission from each of the 15 artists, will include something new this year — teamwork.

“The group will create the album,” said Caroline Shurig, Live From Bloomington director. “Right now we are in the process of selecting the songwriters and musicians, and then we will pick composers and recording art students.”

The team will decide on a theme for the album before creating songs and music for it. In the past the work was a donation from each artist. This year Union Board is funding the project and paying the team.

“How can I ask them to provide me with free work, when the money can help them perform somewhere else or put money into their own recording?” Shurig said.

Any musician or songwriter who is a resident of Bloomington is invited to submit their original music. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 22.

Fifteen songwriters and musicians will be selected to be part of the Brio Pop Society, a name given to the team by a committee member. “Brio Pop” is a made up genre, something Live From Bloomington believes it is creating with the changes to the format of the album. Brio means passion in Italian.

The music from the album will be released, as usual, in a concert at a later date this semester. Although Union Board will not release a CD, iTunes will provide a digital copy of the music.

Students are invited to join the Live From Bloomington committee if interested in other aspects of making the album a success. Contact lfb@indiana.edu for more information.
