IU arrived Thursday at Penn State for the Big Ten Tournament equipped with Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Will Bruin, Big Ten Coach of the Year Todd Yeagley and the conference’s best record.
None of that mattered Friday when the No. 1 seeded Hoosiers lost to No. 4 Penn State 2-1 and caught an early flight home.
An offensive surge yielded Bruin’s 16th goal of the year four minutes into the game, but Nittany Lion goals in both halves made the difference.
Penn State’s Corey Hertzog’s conference-leading 17th goal on the year knotted the game at 1-1, which carried into the second half. Twenty-five minutes into the second half, Justin Lee took a cross from Matheus Braga that he scorced past a diving Luis Soffner to take a 2-1 lead.
A controversial no-call came with 2:50 in the match when Penn State’s Drew Cost took down Nikita Kotlov from behind in the box. A whistle on the play would have resulted in a penalty kick to send the game in overtime.
Regardless, the Hoosiers return to Bloomington with a two-game losing streak as they await their NCAA bid fate. The NCAA Tournament bracket will be announced Monday evening.
