IU goes 3-0 during weekend set

Women's Tennis vs. Ball State

The No. 45 IU women’s tennis team won its first three dual matches of the season this weekend, defeating Western Michigan 6-1 and sweeping both Xavier and Ball State 7-0 at the IU Tennis Center.

“They’re not always easy matches,” IU senior Charlotte Martin said about the team’s victories over the weekend. “With (Xavier and Ball State), this will be one of their biggest matches of the season so they tend to come out really fired up, and we kind of have to make sure we get the job done, which everyone did really well.”

IU coach Lin Loring and Martin agreed that Western Michigan was the Hoosiers’ toughest opponent of the weekend.

The Hoosiers won the first two doubles matches, with freshman Kayla Fujimoto and junior Evgeniya Vertesheva picking up the doubles point for IU with a 9-8 win.

“They always have really good doubles teams, and I thought we played a little tentative,” Loring said. “And then in the singles in that match, we jumped on them early, just never let them in the match, so I was pleased about that.”
