Butler breaks IU 60-meter record, Sherrill continues fast start

Junior Kind Butler could’ve single-handedly melted the ice that kept IU students out of class with his performance Saturday at the GaREAT Invitational.

Butler blazed to a time of 6.67 in the 60-meter dash, making it the fastest IU time in the history of the event.

“I wasn’t excited about not coming in first until I sat down and looked at my time,” Butler said even though he was beat by two Auburn runners. “It was my best race ever, and the fact my teammates did well made it more exciting.”

Butler said he was glad to see senior Devin Pipkin also move up in the IU record books this week. Pipken matched Butler’s previous record with a time of 6.72 in the 60-meter dash, earning him a tie for the second-fastest time in IU school history.

Junior Derek Drouin also set a new IU record, winning the heptathlon with a score of 5,407 points, IU’s highest total ever.

Amid a slew of men’s records, the IU women’s team had its fair share of success this weekend.

Early season standout Faith Sherrill came in first in both her events, winning the shot put and the weight throw with throws of 17.76 meters and 19.36 meters respectively.
