It was January the last time the women’s basketball team won a game. Thursday night IU was finally able to snap a nine-game losing streak and defeat Illinois in Champaign.
The Hoosiers (9-15, 3-9) upended the Illini (7-18, 2-10) 59-52, led by the team’s seniors. Jori Davis, Hope Elam and Whitney Lindsay combined for 50 of the team’s points. Davis led all scorers with 24 points.
The Hoosiers were able to respond to runs by the Illini and not let them get too far ahead; something IU struggled with during their losing streak.
IU Coach Felisha Legette-Jack said over and over again that her players were working hard everyday and soon they would put it all together. Thursday night that happened.
“Tonight we showed what we do in practice, we finally brought it to the lights,” Jack said. “What an exciting opportunity to get out there and really find that success when the lights were on.”
The Hoosiers won the rebounding battle against the Illini, 40-34. Elam led the Hoosiers with seven rebounds.
IU will look to keep the momentum as they head back to Bloomington. Sunday IU takes on Penn State at Assembly Hall at 12:30 p.m.
