Poore, Hubers reach national qualifying marks

The IU track and field squad was separated during the weekend, with some Hoosiers ending their home slate for the 2011 indoor season at the Hoosier Hills meet, while the remainder of the team competed in the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.

Juniors Andrew Poore and Ben Hubers both hit the national qualifying mark in the 3,000-meter run, while the men’s distance medley relay team broke a Gladstein Fieldhouse record with a time of 9:30.78.

Sophomore Chris Vaughn helped lead the Hoosiers in the record-setting race.

“It felt great to be a part of something real good,” Vaughn said. “This was a huge milestone in my life and so far in my track career.”

At the Tyson Invitational, the team continued to get strong performances from senior shot putter and weight thrower Faith Sherrill, who won both her events in the shot put and weight throw with heaves of 17.37 meters and 19.19 meters, respectively.

“Don’t get me wrong. This meet was important, but this was a meet for them to sharpen up and put in some work,” Jones said. “This was sort of a tune-up meet for us and as well the first day of training, so when the Big Tens come around we make sure we’re clicking on all cylinders.”
