The musical trio, The Memorials, will make an impromptu stop in Bloomington.
They will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at Rhino’s.
According to Rhino’s head of booking, David Britton, the group was in search of a venue after its show in Indianapolis was canceled.
After finding that The Bishop was already booked, The Memorials looked to Rhino’s and were welcomed into the lineup for Friday.
Local metal rock bands Taken In and Forever His will share the bill with The Memorials.
The group is composed of Thomas Pridgen, drummer of band The Mars Volta, and vocalist Viveca Hawkins and Nick Brewer on guitar.
Though they formed in 2009, the three have a history, as they met at the Berklee College of Music.
The group’s rock ’n’ roll sound is the answer to what Pridgen calls a musical void.
Pridgen said he recognized the absence of African Americans within the genre.
He said he decided to create his own group.
Needing members for his band Pridgen called on friends Hawkins and Brewer because of their musical past.
They marked this project as different and newer.
“We’re not just after capitalizing on previous fame. We just want people to know what we’re about,” Hawkins said.
The Memorials said they view touring as a way to make sure people hear their music and they value the chance to meet and connect with fans.
The group said fans often don’t know what to expect when they come to shows.
They are often surprised when they like the music they hear.
