Drouin out for the outdoor season

IU junior high jumper Derek Drouin will sit out the remainder of the outdoor track and field season due to a foot injury.

After winning two events at the Big Ten/SEC Challenge last weekend, it was determined Wednesday that Drouin had sustained the foot injury during a high jump attempt at the event.

Drouin will sit out the remainder of the 2011 outdoor season in order to receive surgery.
He will seek a medical redshirt for the outdoor season.

According to a statement released by IU Athletics, coach Ron Helmer foresees Drouin making a full recovery following rehabilitation.

“Our doctors tell us they are confident Derek will return to form in time, and I’m sure Derek will approach this challenge as he has all others, with confidence, maturity and the resolve to come back better than ever,” Helmer said.

The injury comes on the heels of Drouin and senior pole vaulter Vera Neuenswander being named Big Ten Field Athletes of the Week, an honor awarded to them yesterday.
