Knight returns to Indiana(polis)

Former IU basketball coach Bob Knight will be speaking at a school in Indiana on Sept. 14 not named IU.

According to the Indianapolis Star, Knight will speak at Butler University about college athletics in today’s world, in addition to memories from his years of coaching.
Members of the audience will be allowed to ask questions following the speech.

Tickets, which go on sale April 4, will cost between $25 and $75.

Knight coached the Hoosiers from 1971 to September 2000, after late IU
President Myles Brand fired him for repeated incidents of aggressive behavior.

When Brand presented Knight with an ultimatum of either resigning or being fired, Knight chose the latter.

In his time at IU, Knight won three NCAA Championships (1976, ’81, ’87) with five Final Four appearances and 11 Big Ten regular season titles and was named the Naismith College Coach of the Year in 1987.

His 1976 squad remains the last college basketball team with a perfect season.

D.J. White Hot

Since being traded to the Charlotte Bobcats on Feb. 24, former IU standout D.J. White has outpaced the numbers he was putting up in Oklahoma City.

In March, White scored in double figures in six games, including a career-high 17 points in a win at Boston on March 25.

White has been plagued by injury throughout his three-year career in the NBA.
He is averaging 9.2 points and 20.3 minutes per game in March, after scoring 2.7 points and playing seven minutes per game in February.

In his senior year at IU, White was named Big Ten Player of the Year and was a unanimous first team All-Big Ten selection.

He finished his collegiate career as the 16th-highest scorer in IU history with 1,447 points, ninth in rebounding and second in field goal percentage.

New Award from IU Athletics

IU Athletics has announced that it will begin presenting the Spirit of Indiana Director’s Medal to one senior male student-athlete and one senior female student-athlete each year who best represent the school’s “24 Sports, One Team” policy.

The award will be presented at an annual Spirit of Indiana Showcase gala.

This year’s inaugural ceremony will take place April 25 at the IU Auditorium. The event is closed to the public.
