Scrambled lineup still too much for Wright State

Men's Tennis vs. Wright State

A makeshift IU lineup defeated Wright State 6-1 Sunday at the IU Tennis Center.

IU coach Randy Bloemendaal had planned to toy with the lineup against the Raiders anyway, but a flu virus ran through the team and further depleted the roster of the No. 41 Hoosiers (10-4).

Five Hoosiers won singles matches in straight sets. Everyone but junior Jeremy Langer, who won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, played higher in the lineup than normal for an IU team that sat three of its starters.

Bloemendaal said the team played well considering it used a lineup with three freshmen.

He also said Sunday’s match was a good tune-up before Purdue visits Saturday in the Big Ten opener.

“In matches like this we can work on specific things,” Bloemendaal said. “All week long, we worked on some mental things that are going to help (in Big Ten play).”

IU senior Santiago Gruter said aside from making some minor adjustments, the team is ready to start the conference season.

“Basically, we’ve had all the preparation we need for the Big Ten,” Gruter said. “We can’t wait another match to show what we can do.”
