‘Cave’ sheds light on paintings, 3-D

In the trailer for his film, the narration of German filmmaker Werner Herzog hints at the potential buried in the “Cave of Forgotten Dreams.”

“This cave has been perfectly sealed for tens of thousands of years,” Herzog said of the Chauvet cave in the south of France, in which are preserved the oldest known cave paintings in existence. “It is as if the modern human soul had awakened here.”

At 7 p.m. today, the IU Cinema will screen a free sneak preview of Herzog’s 3-D documentary, which will premiere in U.S. theaters April 29.

The president of IFC Entertainment, Jonathan Sehring, will introduce the film. In September 2010, Sehring’s company acquired the U.S. rights to the film, excluding television, which belongs to the History Channel.

“We were completely blown away by this tour de force from Werner Herzog,” Sehring said in a press release. “This is what great 3-D technology was created for.”

Tickets for the screening are sold out, but those without tickets can wait in the IU Cinema lobby up to 30 minutes prior to the show for available seats.
