Donald Trump will not drive pace car at Indianapolis 500

Donald Trump will not be a part of the 100th anniversary running of the Indianapolis 500.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced today that the businessman, who originally agreed to drive the pace car in the May 29 race, will refrain from doing so because he felt it would be inappropriate when coupled alongside his potential candidacy for the office of President of the United States.

“I very much appreciate the honor, but time and business constraints make my appearance there, especially with the necessary practice sessions, impossible to fulfill,” Trump said in the statement. “I look forward to watching the race from New York.”

Trump’s selection had received backlash earlier in the week from fans with concerns Trump was using his involvement at the race as a promotional opportunity. Trump’s replacement will be announced later this month, the Speedway said in the statement.
