Bayer named 1st Academic All-American for men's track, cross country

Having set records on the track throughout the past school year, sophomore Andy Bayer set one more.

This time, however, the record was set in the classroom.

Bayer was named an Academic All-American, the first ever for men’s track and field/cross country at IU.

He has a 3.56 grade-point average and is a biology major.

“He is what you want a student-athlete to be,” IU coach Ron Helmer said. “On the track, he is one of the best athletes in the country, and in the classroom he holds himself to the same high standard.”

He was a 2010 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, on the Academic All-Big Ten list this past fall and received the IU Sportsmanship Award for men’s track.

His athletic accomplishments from this year include setting a school and world record in the 3,000-meter in 7:48.35 back in January.

In addition, he was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year.
