'First Class' comic flick

xmen

With relentless action and deep thought injected into the feelings of the super-powered characters, producer Brian Singer’s return to mutants is an exciting ride with a human heart.

Being an outcast from society is at the emotional core of this film, and the tensions in the relationships are palpable as the mutants are forced to choose between friends and beliefs, in this prequel to the popular X-men series.

The cast creates a surprisingly effective ensemble and exudes an unusual magnetism; expect to see these young actors in many films to come.

Veteran actors Kevin Bacon and Oliver Platt tend to have scenes stolen out from under them by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy.

The dialogue tends to be overly dramatic as the teams’ disagreements escalate until the end of the film, but the use of powers is creative and the mutants’ journey to carve out a place for themselves in a world they’ve been rejected from is hard not to root for.

The careful metaphor of mutants as real life outcasts has returned as a smarter film with much at stake. Fans of the series, make sure you see the latest addition.
