The IU field hockey team faltered for the first time this season, falling in back-to-back away games on a West Coast road trip. On Friday, they fell to No. 16 Stanford 3-2, then lost two days later to California 3-1.
The two road losses ended the team’s four game win streak to open the season and set their record at 4-2.
After going down a goal in the sixth minute, the IU offense responded quickly as senior forward Jaclyn Zamudio scored in the twelfth minute.
Later, Zamudio evened up the match in the 37th minute after a 35th minute goal from the Cardinal offense. In the 59th minute, Stanford’s Hope Burke answered to lead the Hoosiers 3-2, a lead that would stand until the final whistle.
“I think we need to go back to executing our fundamentals,” IU Coach Amy Robertson said, “We need to be able to possess the ball going from our 50 to our end line.”
Hoping to right the ship Sunday, the Hoosiers tied the Bears at 1-1 off a goal by senior forward Katie Griswold.
However, it wouldn’t be enough, as Cal netted two more goals to seal the win.
“We panic sometimes, and we’re put under some pressure,” Robertson added. “Other than really (seeking) more purpose, we sometimes turn the ball over. We definitely could’ve done some better things with it.”
IU travels to Oxford, Ohio on Sept. 15 to face UC Davis.
“Individually we have to take accountability,” Robertson said. “We have to be prepared a little better.”
