Field Hockey
Hoosiers top Providence, shut-out by Louisville

Result The IU field hockey team won a 6-2 victory against Providence on Saturday but lost 1-0 to Louisville on Sunday.

The Action Senior Jaclyn Zamudio netted a hat trick in the team’s first game of the weekend and helped the Hoosiers beat the Friars by four goals. Senior forward Morgan Fleetwood also had an impressive offensive performance Friday, scoring two goals with one assist. The game was played in Louisville, Ky., a neutral site for both teams.

On Sunday, IU’s offense couldn’t find the back of the net. Despite holding Louisville scoreless through the first half, the Cardinals got a goal in the 57th minute. The Hoosiers had just five shots on goal and three corners. Goalie Vicki Green had one save in 70 minutes of play.

Key Play  It started with a penalty corner in the eighth minute, giving Zamudio her first goal. In the 27th and 67th minutes, Zamudio celebrated netting two more goals to complete her hat trick.

Quote of Note “Our chemistry needs to be better right now,” IU Coach Amy Robertson said. “We need to call each other out. We need to build each other up. It’s really more of an overall team issue, not one specific area of the game.”

Notable Number Zero — in the game against Louisville, the Hoosiers were scoreless for the first time this season.
Up Next IU finishes the regular season to face off with Michigan at 4 p.m. Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich.

MacTaggart advances to singles quarterfinals, doubles semifinals

Result: The IU men’s tennis team has a strong start to its fall season at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional in Knoxville, Tenn., with two tandems reaching the semifinals in doubles competition and junior Josh MacTaggart advancing to the quarterfinals in singles action.

The Action: After three days of play at the regional, IU remains in contention in both the singles and doubles tournaments. MacTaggart, the lone Hoosier still alive in the bracket, has lived up to his lofty pre-tournament No. 3 seeding thus far, defeating four opponents on his way to the quarterfinals.

MacTaggart’s path to the last eight has been far from straight-forward. He dropped the first set in each of his last two matches but managed to rally and advance in both cases.

Though MacTaggart represents the only cream and crimson still left in the singles tournament, all six Hoosiers fared well. Each won his first round match, and Isade Juneau, Jeremy Langer, Dimitrije Tasic and Stephen Vogl all progressed to the round of 32.

IU has two of the four remaining teams in doubles play. Juneau and Langer have won three matches, including a 8-6 quarterfinal victory to earn a place in the semifinals. The other duo, MacTaggart and Vogl, vanquished their Univeristy of Tennessee opponent 8-5 in the quarterfinals to reach the same stage.

Notable number: 6-0  — IU’s record in the first round of singles play at the tournament.
Up Next: MacTaggart is slated to square off against MTSU’s Ben Davis today at 9:30 a.m. Juneau and Langer play the top-rated team, Kentucky, at 2 p.m., while MacTaggart and Vogl will face Tennessee at the same time. Should both IU pairs advance, it would set up an all-Hoosier final for Monday.

Hoosiers trails behind after opening round at Isleworth

Result: The IU men’s golf team is in 10th place at the Isleworth
Collegiate Invitational at Isleworth Country Club in Windermere, Fla.

The Action: The Hoosiers are among the 15-team field in their last event of the fall season. After posting a 296 in the first round, the team is only one stroke behind Florida, Oklahoma State, Augusta State and Louisiana State University, which are all tied for sixth.

Sophomore David Mills carded low for the day, turning in an even-par 72 and tying for 11th. Senior co-captain Chase Wright and junior Corey Ziedonis each finished at 73 and are tied for 17th. Rounding out the rest of the squad are senior co-captain David Erdy and junior Brant Peaper, who are tied for 56th at 78.

Currently in first place is first-ranked Texas at 278, which is sweeping the field by nine strokes going into the second round.

Key Play: Mills will lead the Hoosiers going into the second round Monday, saving par with three birdies after making three bogies on holes two, five and nine.

Notable Number: Eighteen — the number of strokes IU needs to make up in the second round to be in contention with first-place Texas.

Up Next: The second round of the invite will begin at 8 a.m. Monday, followed by the final round Oct. 25.
