GLOWfest to bring music to Pic-a-chic

It’s been a while since Pic-a-chic Farms acted as a major concert venue, said Deuce Thevenow, GLOWfest co-founder and IU graduate  — not since LL Cool J and Kid Rock played shows there sometime in the 1990s.

“The University was putting restrictions on doing shows in the fall, and we had this idea in our back pocket.” Thevenow said.

LL Cool J and Kid Rock were at the height of their careers when they performed at Pic-a-chic, and now GLOWfest is bringing a new generation of music to the farm: electronic.

On Wednesday, Deadmau5 and three guests will perform at the farm as GLOWfest’s fourth Bloomington show.

“I think it’s going to be one of the biggest electronic shows to go down in Indiana in a long time,” Thevenow said.

About 7,000 concertgoers are expected to attend, Thevenow said, though some people may be hesitant of the new venue.

“It’s absolutely beautiful out here,” Thevenow said. “But they told us the artists they wanted to see...we did everything in our power to make that go through.”

To make the show happen, Thevenow said the organization had to jump through a few hoops with the City of Bloomington and Monroe County.

They worked out noise issues, parking and the amount of traffic on neighboring roads. With a concert on University property, those issues didn’t fall under GLOWfest concern. However, because the concert is off campus, it required a bit more research and planning.

“Literally, we’re taking an open field and turning it into a concert venue and parking area,” Thevenow said.

Pic-a-chic Farms is 10 miles from campus, a 15-minute drive. But concertgoers can catch a bus to the show from McNutt Quad, Kilroy’s Sports Bar or The Bluebird Nightclub for $10.

Turning a field into a venue isn’t the only first for GLOWfest with this concert. Attendees will be able to purchase alcohol from vendors at the concert, which will be mitigated through wristbands that allow those of age to buy one beer at a time.

“I don’t think there are going to be any hiccups,” Thevenow said.

Even with the changes, Thevenow  said he is confident in Deadmau5’s performance and GLOWfest’s planning.

“We want to be at the forefront of new and electronic music,” he said.
