Team opens home season with dual meets

Last Time
The IU wrestling  team had four of its wrestlers place at the Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Mich.

Redshirt freshman Taylor Walsh (149 pounds) earned first place. Redshirt freshman Ryen Nieman (133 pounds) earned third place, senior Matt Ortega (141 pounds) earned fourth place and sophomore Ryan Leblanc (174 pounds) finished in fifth place.

The Set-Up

The Hoosiers will wrestle at 5 p.m. Friday in the University Gym.

The Context

The IU wrestling team will wrestle the IU Quad at home. This match will be both the first dual meet as well as the first home meet of the season for the Hoosiers. They will wrestle against Calumet College of Saint Joseph, Central Missouri and Lindsey Wilson.

Last year, the Hoosiers swept the IU Quad with a combined score of 130-9.
This season, the team said it hopes to have a meet just as successful as last year, after having a couple of tournaments in Michigan.

“The guys have had a couple of tough weekends and are looking a little sluggish. It’s good we have a match Friday to give them something to think about and get them back on course,” IU Coach Duane Goldman said.

Notable Number

8. The number of pins the Hoosiers earned at last
season’s IU Quad dual meet.

Quote of Note

“(Preston) Keiffer is still going to be out, but everyone else should be able to wrestle,” Goldman said.
