Senior forward and co-captain Georgie Jones suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in the sixth game of the season Thursday against Virginia.
The injury will keep Jones out for the remainder of the season.
The St. Paul, Minn., native was averaging 8.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.
“A double-double captain and leader of the team,” Coach Felisha Legette-Jack said. “It certainly impacts the team.”
An ACL injury might require surgery to regain full function of the knee, depending on the injury’s severity and the victim’s activity level, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
Jones recorded three double-doubles in the first six games of the season.
On Nov. 14, in a home win against Murray State, Jones tied her career high with 16 points and tallied 13 rebounds.
“She’s not going to play the rest of the season, so we are going to find that double-double, that leadership,” Legette-Jack said.
One game after the Hoosiers lost Jones to the injury, team members said the team feels it needs to fill that void.
“Especially in this game with Georgie down, we all had just had a focus of giving it everything we had for the team and Georgie,” junior forward Aulani Sinclair said.
Legette-Jack said the team needs to continue to search for production through others on the team.
“I don’t see a lot of teams losing their leading scorer and rebounder and captain and leader on the floor and still have success, but we have to find a way,” she said.
