Up by 11 with less than seven minutes to play Wednesday, the IU basketball team couldn’t put the finishing touches on Nebraska.
Two free throws by Nebraska forward Jorge Brian Diaz with 11 seconds remaining gave Nebraska its first lead in the second half, and a Jordan Hulls desperation heave went for not as the Cornhuskers (9-9, 2-5) beat No. 11/13 Indiana 70-69 (15-4, 3-4) in Lincoln, Neb.
IU was up 63-52 with 6:37 left before the Cornhuskers made their comeback.
Hulls, an 89 percent free shooter, missed the front end of a one-and-one with 24 seconds left, giving Nebraska the chance to win the game.
Freshman forward Cody Zeller led the Hoosiers with 18 points but did not score during the game’s final 14 minutes.
Leading scorer Bo Spencer led all scorers with 23 points, and his 15 first half points already was more than his season average of 14.8 points per game.
The Hoosiers will wrap up the week at noon Sunday when they take on Penn State at Assembly Hall. IU beat Penn State earlier in the season 88-82 in State College, Pa.
Final: IU 69, NU 70
