Powless, Chaudoin take top honors at 2nd annual Spirit of Indiana Showcase

Spirit of Indiana Showcase

Dozens of IU student-athletes ditched cleats and jerseys for loafers and dresses Monday night during the second annual Spirit of Indiana Showcase at the IU Auditorium.

The awards show honors student-athletes for accomplishments on and off the field during the 2011-12 sports seasons. Student-athletes voted on some awards, while the Athletics Department selected others.

The most prestigious of the awards, the Directors Award, is given to a male and female senior athlete who the department thinks best represents The Spirit of Indiana: 24 Sports, One Team.

Following in the footsteps of the 2011 winners, softball player Sara Olson and football player Ben Chappell, volleyball player Mary Chaudoin and wrestler Matt Powless received the Directors Award Monday night.

Chaudoin, a setter for the volleyball team, ranks seventh in IU history in assists with 2,840, and was a starter for the 2010-11 team that reached the Sweet Sixteen.

“I am so extremely flattered right now,” Chaudoin said in a release from IU Athletics. “All I can say is thank you for my time here, I loved it.”

Powless ranks fifth in school history with 124 wins during his wrestling career, including an All-American junior season during which he led Division-I wrestling with 13 major decisions.

He was also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree who is in graduate school pursuing a master's degree in Psychology Counseling.

“I love my teammates and I’ll never forget my time here with them,” Powless said in a release from IU Athletics. “My decision to come wrestle at Indiana was the best of my life.”

The student-athletes themselves voted for the men's basketball team's comeback against VCU in the NCAA Tournament as the Comeback of the Year and selected Allysa Vavra's performance in the Big Ten Championships as the performance of the year.

IU trailed by six points with 4:26 remaining in the third-round NCAA Tournament game, only to come back and beat the Rams 63-61 on a shot from sophomore Will Sheehey in the final seconds.

Vavra set three IU records during the Big Ten Championships in mid-February, including a Big Ten record in the 400-yard individual medley, which was also the 15th-fastest time ever. Her performance earned her Swimmer of the Championships.
