Cuban heritage comes to IU

CUBAmistad is a sister-city project between Bloomington and Santa Clara, Cuba.
 
The celebration began Friday with a reception at Boxcar Books. IU Cinema will show the first in a series of four “CUBAmistad”-themed films today.

Two exhibits open today that will remain on display until November.

‘Habanastation’
7 p.m. today
IU Cinema
Directed by Ian Padron, “Habanastation” explores everyday Cuba through the lives of a poor student and the wealthy son of a jazz musician.

¡Cuba si! Posters from the revolution: 1960s and 1970s
9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
Mathers Museum of World Cultures
Gerrie Casey, collector of the posters, will give a guest lecture at 5 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Mathers Museum.

Picturing ‘Che’
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, 12 to 5 p.m. Sunday
IU Art Museum
British pop artist Joe Tilson’s renditions of images of Ernesto “Che” Guevara are on display now at the Museum. Filmmaker Hector Cruz Sandovalt will discuss how photography immortalized Guevara as a revolutionary hero at 12:15 p.m. Sept. 18 in the Gallery of the Art of the Western World.
