Jacobs organ conference to include free performances

The Jacobs School of Music’s organ department has organized a “New Fingers for Old Music” conference in partnership with Indiana Organists United.

The three-day organ conference includes a variety of free performances, panel discussions and workshops, including some that are open to the public.

More than 60 alumni from across the United States are expected to attend, according to the press release. All events listed below take place in Auer Hall unless stated otherwise.

Monday

“It’s A Good Thing to Give Thanks”
3 p.m.
A concert of hymns and anthems by faculty member Bruce Neswick with alumni, emeritus professors and students.

“Seasons of Sebastian”
8 p.m.
A recital by Janet Fishell, organ department chair and music professor. Fishell will be honored for her 2012 Oswald Gleason Ragatz Distinguished Alumni Award at a banquet earlier in the evening.

Tuesday

“Orgelbüchlein”
1 p.m.
A performance of J.S. Bach’s 46 choral preludes by students of the organ department. Bach composed all but three of the preludes in “Little Organ Book” between 1708 and 1717.

“Spite Marriage”
8 p.m.
Jacobs alumnus John Schwandt will accompany a showing of the 1929 silent film “Spite Marriage” on organ. Schwandt is the director of the American Organ Institute at the University of Oklahoma.

Wednesday

Workshops and panel discussions are open only to registered conference attendees.
