IU endures last fall event

The IU women’s golf team will compete this weekend in the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, the team’s final tournament of the fall season.

The team will compete against 17 other teams in the tournament, including three other Big Ten teams.

Unlike other tournaments the Hoosiers have played this year, this tournament spans three days, which IU Coach Clint Wallman believes will be beneficial to his team.

“I can think back a couple of tournaments where, had we had the 18-hole break to the next day, we wouldn’t have shot a big number in the second round,” Wallman said. “Too many times, you tend to go from the 18th to the 19th hole and don’t have time to regroup.”

Senior Rosie Davies had a top-10 finish last weekend and will lead the Hoosiers playing in the first spot.

Joining her will be graduate student Kristen Schelling, freshman Marissa DeCola, sophomore Elizabeth Tong and senior Pamela Burneski.

Wallman said the team is very internally motivated, and that will help them take charge of their individual performance.

“Success is not how you do compared to others,” Wallman said. “It’s how you do compared to your own best self. We try to make sure that everyone fully understands that you are in charge of your own golf game.”

The Hoosiers have finished in the top four in three of their four tournaments so far and have shown flashes of excellence on several occasions, including last weekend’s competition.

“The 285 that we shot in the second round last weekend, I felt was a really important round,” Wallman said. “It showed us that no matter what the circumstances are, that we can shoot a low round at any time.”

Wallman said he hopes for three more low rounds next week.

“I think that we have done some really good things throughout this entire fall,” Wallman said. “We have played fairly steady. I’d like to see us continue building and doing what we’re doing well.”
