5 recruits sign letters of intent for 2013 class

Five of Indiana’s six basketball recruits in the 2013 recruiting class signed their binding letters of intent Wednesday. The sixth, forward Troy Williams, is expected to sign on Monday.

The six-man class, IU’s largest since 2009, is ranked No. 3 nationally by Rivals.com, trailing only Kentucky and Kansas.

It also features the highest-ranked recruit IU has received a commitment from under IU Coach Tom Crean in forward Noah Vonleh, ranked No. 7 by Rivals.com.

“There are hundreds and hundreds of talented individuals in this world, but it goes back to the certain characteristics we talk about on this staff that we feel like are valuable and important to us, and once you can recognize that in an individual, you can go through the process of identifying if there’s a true interest on their part,” Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Kenny Johnson said.

IU is set to lose only three seniors to graduation, meaning three more scholarships will need to open up due to attrition for all six commitments to play on scholarship next season.
