Indigo Girls to perform at Buskirk-Chumley Theater

Grammy-award winning folk rock group The Indigo Girls will perform a sold-out show at 8 p.m. Friday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

First performing as The Indigo Girls in 1985, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1990 for their self-titled album.

The duo performed sold-out shows at the Buskirk-Chumley in 2004 and 2010.
Ticket pre-sale for the show began July 16 and went on sale to the general public July 18.

The Indigo Girls released their 14th studio album, “Beauty Queen Sister,” on Oct. 4, 2011.

It is their fourth studio album released on their independent label IG Recordings.

“When I think about the record, I think the songs hold together really well and I think they mark a certain maturity in our writing or just reflect this time of life,” Saliers said in a 2011 interview with the Huffington Post.

In addition to their successful musical careers, Ray started the nonprofit label Daemon Records.

Saliers is an author and restaurant entrepreneur.

Both are political activists, promoting causes from the environment to Native American rights and are considered icons of the LGBT rights movement.

“Some people listen to music for music and some people listen for lyrics,” Saliers said later in the interview. “I think our fans take our songs with them sort of like a travel log. I’ve heard people say it’s like a sound track for them and I think that’s because our fans are just the same kind of people we are.”
