Cane Toads: An Unnatural History

Woodburn 101

Made in 1998, “Cane Toads: An Unnatural History” documents the introduction of the toads to control the cane beetle population in Australia. The toads began to multiply rapidly and are now considered an invasive species, spreading diseases and harming the native habitat. “Cane Toads” is part of the Animal Behavior Film Series and the 2012 Themester “Good Behavior, Bad Behavior: Molecules to Morality.”

Warm Bodies

IU Cinema

The cinema will screen a sneak preview of new zombie romantic comedy film “Warm Bodies.” Starring British actor Nicholas Hoult as “R,” the main character, the film will not be released in theaters until Feb. 1, 2013. Tickets are free, but must be obtained at gofobo.com/rsvp with a special RSVP code. More information about the special code is available on IU Cinema’s website.

Collecting German Expressionism

12:15 p.m. Wednesday

IU Art Museum

Jenny McComas, curator of western art after 1800, will give a talk titled “Collecting German Expressionism: An Ethical Dilemma” at the IU Art Museum. McComas’ talk will discuss the moral issues American collectors had to wrestle with when buying German Expressionist artwork from the Nazis. Termed “degenerate art,” modern art movements were banned by the Nazi regime such as expressionism, surrealism and cubism and sold many pieces to collectors abroad in 1939. The talk was organized in conjunction with Themester 2012.

Bloomington bands Fluffer, Triptides, The Broderick will perform at this musical showcase. Organized by students from the SPEA A236, Music Industry I is taught by jazz musician and IU alumna Monika Herzig. Archibald Progers will be the event’s host, and it will be recorded live by Midwest Recording. Admission costs $3. See the “Dead Beat Dead Week” Facebook event page for more information.

Seasons of Sebastian

Beck Chapel

Janette Fishell, a professor of music in organ at the Jacobs School of Music, will perform several of Johann Sebastian Bach’s chorale preludes during this faculty recital titled “Seasons of Sebastian: Concert XIV Bach at Beck.” The performance is free and open to the public.

First Friday Gallery walk

5 p.m. Friday

Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District

Several new exhibits will open this Friday during the December Downtown Bloomington Gallery Walk. Participating galleries include By Hand Gallery, gallery406, pictura gallery and the Venue Fine Art & Gifts, among others.  Most exhibits will be displayed until mid-January.
