After Purdue got into quick foul trouble early on, the IU men's basketball team was able to run out to a 20-point lead at halftime against the Boilermakers, up 47-27 heading into the locker room in West Lafayette.
As a team, Purdue committed 11 fouls in the first half, but most notably, center A.J. Hammons was charged with three as he continued to play midway through the half with two already.
With 4:18 left in the half and IU already up nine-points, 34-25, Hammons sent senior forward Christian Watford to the line for two free throw shots, and the freshman took a seat on the bench for the rest of the half with three fouls.
From there, IU pushed the pace as the Boilers went cold from the field, finishing the half on a 13-2 run, including eight free throws and a 3-pointer from Watford at the top of the key.
The Hoosiers shot just 40.6 percent from the field in the first half (13-of-32) but hit 16 of 17 shots from the charity stripe, while the Boilermakers only shot four free throws, making two.
Sophomore forward Cody Zeller excelled in the first half while Hammons struggled in foul trouble. Zeller won the battle down low with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Purdue's center led his team with nine points.
