Hoffman dismissed from team

UPDATE: Former IU relief pitcher Jonny Hoffman has been charged with a Class C felony of drug dealing, according to state case records.

Subsequently, the IU baseball program dismissed Hoffman from the team on Sunday.
Hoffman was arrested on Dec. 8, 2012, in Bloomington on suspicions of distributing marijuana, salvia, hash oil or other synthetic cannabinoid substance. Charges were filed on Friday at Monroe Circuit Court 5.

Hoffman will next appear in court on Jan. 16 when an initial hearing will take place.
Last season as a junior, Hoffman led IU in multiple pitching categories, including eight wins, five saves, 29 appearances and a 2.27 earned run average. In light of his performance, he was named to the 2012 All-Big Ten first team.

The same year he was credited with either a win or a save in nine of the Hoosiers’ 14 regular season Big Ten wins was also the year he received a late invite to play in the Cape Cod League.

In the 2012 Big Ten Tournament Hoffman pitched in all four games and allowed just two earned runs in 10.1 innings, earning him a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Hoffman was named the preseason Big Ten Pitcher of the Year by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and was expected to anchor the Hoosiers’ bullpen in 2013.

As of Sunday evening, the IU athletic department had no further comment on the situation.

IU opens its 2013 season Feb. 15, when the team will face Louisville in the Big East/Big Ten Challenge in Florida.
