IU Coach Curt Miller frequently talked about a lack of scoring options on this season’s IU women’s basketball team, which averaged a Big Ten-worst 55.2 points per game.
If Tyra Buss is any indication, it won’t be a problem with future teams.
Buss, a 2014 verbal commit to the Hoosiers, was named Illinois Ms. Basketball Tuesday.
“I am just overwhelmed with emotion right now,” Buss said in a press release. “I feel so blessed, and I’m so grateful for being honored with this award. It makes me feel good to know that my hard work and dedication is being recognized.”
Buss put together an incredible junior year at Mount Carmel High School in Mt. Carmel, Ill. She broke the Illinois single-season scoring record with 1,285 points, 83 more than the previous record set in 2007. In late February, she was named First Team All-State for the third consecutive year.
For the season, Buss averaged 38.9 points, 6.0 steals, 3.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.
“I am so thankful to the people that voted for me,” Buss said. “I am especially thankful for my family and all of my coaches and teammates who have all helped make this moment possible. I am so proud to represent Illinois with the title of Ms. Basketball for the game I respect and love to play.”
