Firearm license application process moves online only

Paper is no longer needed to apply for a firearm license in Indiana. The Internet is.

The Indiana State Police announced Monday that the process to apply for a license to carry a firearm is moving from a paper process to an enhanced electronic
application.

The State Police want to streamline the application process for citizens. The new process will also make the review and approval by local agencies and the State Police easier.

An electronic application already existed, but Monday the State Police made an enhanced version available.

Essentially, the new version will completely eliminate the old paper version.

Part of the application process will include having a set of fingerprints associated with the license application. Some fingerprints are still submitted on paper fingerprint cards.

However, effective May 15, only electronic fingerprints will be accepted and used.

Currently, fees to obtain a handgun license range from $5 to $60, according to the State Police’s website.
