Students will have a chance to voice their questions to leaders of prominent campus organizations during a town hall meeting at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Georgian Room of the Indiana Memorial Union.
“Hot-button issues and different topics that students should be aware of on campus will be discussed,” Union Board Marketing Director Erin Brown said.
For a few weeks, Union Board has been collecting questions from students, who are encouraged to email their questions to ubvoice@indiana.edu, Brown said.
Groups represented at the meeting will be IUSA, Union Board, IU Student Foundation, Interfraternity Council, Student Alumni Association, Panhellenic Association,
Residence Halls Association, Board of Aeons, IU National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Multicultural Greek Council.
Indiana Daily Student Managing Editor Matthew Glowicki will moderate
the event.
Union Board Current Events and Issues Director Anu Kumar, also an IDS employee, said there are three defined topics: rising tuition prices, campus safety and minority representation.
Campus organization representatives will discuss what they are doing about these issue, Kumar said.
Student body President Kyle Straub said the town hall meeting will benefit students because it is good for them to be aware of the efforts of their student leaders on campus.
“This meeting will clarify a lot of ambiguity that many students feel is going on right now,” Straub said.
Union Board representatives decided the town hall was necessary in order to increase student discussion.
“Town halls are a great starting point for many discussions,” Kumar said. “We hope the information the panelists have to offer will motivate students to get more involved in order to have more of a direct impact on these issues.”
The town hall meeting may also give insight to organizations, Kumar said.
“Many of these student leaders meet behind closed doors with the Dean of Students,” Kumar said. “We thought it would be a good idea to establish a level of transparency.”
Straub noted that the town hall is a chance for students to get a look at the organizations that serve them.
“This is also an opportunity to understand how student organizations can better work together to complete their goals,” Straub said.
The meeting is open to the public, and there will be an open question-and-
answer session afterward.
“This is really great, because it’s one of the first times we’ve had so many representatives from major organizations on campus in one place at the same time,”
Brown said.
