Indianapolis Public Schools may eliminate 59 positions in conjunction with the district’s $30 million budget deficit, according to a press release issued by IPS.
Interim Superintendent Peggy Hinckley recommended cuts after reviewing the positions. Hinckley is filling in for former superintendent Eugene White, who announced his resignation in January.
Through the eliminations of these positions, the district would save about $2.9 million.
John Althardt, director of school and community relations, said these cuts will affect all areas throughout the district. There will also be further job eliminations in May and June.
Althardt said the district will work hard to keep these cuts from affecting students and make sure all schools have strong principals and support staff.
“Our goal is to make sure any cuts we make have little or no impact on our students,” he said.
The district will also consolidate some programs in an effort to conserve money.
