He might not don shining armor, but he’s still a knight.
Former Sen. Richard Lugar will be bestowed the rank of Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in a ceremony Tuesday at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Lugar’s services will emphasize solving “our most serious challenges in a spirit of cooperation between our countries,” he said in a prepared statement.
Though Lugar will receive the rank, he will not have the privilege of carrying “Sir” as a prefix in the title. “Sir” is granted exclusively to British subjects of the Queen.
Earlier this year, as announced in January, Lugar was named as a co-chair to the advisory committee for the newly formed IU School of Global and International Studies.
Lugar is the longest-serving senator in the state’s history and also chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
