The USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee announced its first round of cuts Wednesday, and both Hoosiers trying out made the cut.
Rising senior Will Sheehey and rising sophomore Yogi Ferrell have advanced to the final 16 for the USA men’s junior national team.
The final cut will come July 1 as the team reduces to its 12-man roster before it leaves for Russia.
This initial cut came after three days of training camp practice in Colorado Springs, Colo. The committee cut 10 players Wednesday in the initial cut to move the roster from 26 to 16 players.
The team will travel to Kazan, Russia, to take part in the World University Games July 7-16.
Michigan State’s Adreian Payne and Iowa’s Aaron White also made the cut as the two other Big Ten players remaining on the roster.
“I think we have the nucleus of a really good team,” Coach Jim Boeheim said in a press release. “We’ve got good big guys, we’ve got good wing players, we’ve got scorers, we’ve got shooters, so I think it’s a balanced team. That’s what you hope for on these teams.”
Lyle chooses Cards, not Hoosiers
IU lost a recruiting battle Wednesday as 2014 guard JaQuan Lyle announced his commitment to Louisville on Twitter.
IU was one of Lyle’s final schools.
“Yes, it’s true. I’m going to be a cardinal, and attend the University of Louisville for college.” Lyle tweeted.
He attached an instagram photo of a screenshot he took of a text message addressed to “Coach P” that said “Coach, my recruitment process is over. I’m going to be a Lousiville Cardinal. Cardnation!!!”
Lyle, a 6-foot-5-inch guard from Evansville Bosse, is ranked as the No. 5 shooting guard in the country and the No. 2 recruit in Indiana by 247Sports.
He is the second high-profile recruit that the Hoosiers have lost recently, as five-star Theo Pinson committed to North Carolina in late May.
