Ferrell, Sheehey help USA to 3-0 mark

IU sophomore guard Yogi Ferrell and senior forward Will Sheehey were already expected to be leaders of the IU basketball team.

But now they’re showing  they can lead more than just the IU team.

With contributions from both, the Team USA men’s basketball team is off to a 3-0 start at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

In Wednesday’s game, Ferrell scored 20 points on 4-of-7 from 3-point range to lead Team USA to a 83-65 victory against Sweden.

Team USA has now won its first three games by a combined 155 points.

Sheehey added seven points in Wednesday’s game.

IU Director of Basketball Operations Calbert Cheaney said in a press release Tuesday that the overseas experience will help both players moving forward.

“I think it will help them to define their roles as leaders a little bit more,” he said. “But, like I said experience more than anything. Having the opportunity to play with that ‘USA’ on your chest, represent your country, and go out there and try to win a Gold Medal for the country that you play for. That’s what it’s all about.

“But, like I said without a doubt probably the leadership aspect and the experience will probably be the forefront here once they get back.”
