Simplistic furniture design and print art come together to form a single exhibit at one local gallery.
“Simple is Best,” a show featuring contemporary furniture pieces from Siosi Design + Build and prints by Los Angeles-based artist Jeremy Kennedy, is currently on display at the I. Fell Building’s Bloomington Clay Studio until July 31.
The pairing of pieces in the show was meant to draw a connection between designed objects and artistic representations on canvas, according to a press release.
Siosi Design + Build is a collaboration between local design duo Ivy Siosi and Audim Q. Culver.
The two collaborate to create woodworking pieces with a twist, such as the duo’s “Animal Box” — a small, rolling cart with a brightly colored animal painted on one side.
Examples include an orange and yellow wolf, a multicolored, roaring lion and a two-headed turtle.
Kennedy’s prints convey a sense of simplicity through sparse textual representations and sparing use of color and texture.
Kennedy is a self-taught artist who spent almost ten years studying art while living in Bloomington before moving to Los Angeles in 2009.
He draws inspiration from humor and wordplay to create conceptual pieces for his audiences, according to a press release.
His works often feature hand drawn people in black and white, with accompanying text.
One of his latest works, “Better Everyday,” depicts a police officer and another mustached man in a jacket, spewing multicolored lines from the tops of their heads. Muted brown, orange and dark pink letters spell out the phrase “We are here to burn down your car.”
